Men’s Country Week tees off

Just over 100 players commenced the 2015 Men’s Country Week, with the first round of the Victorian Men’s Country Championship played today at Gardiners Run Golf Course (new home of Chirnside Park). The new location on Victoria Road in Lilydale has been in play since May 2014 and is a challenging 6,210 metre course.

Defending champion Zach Murray (Wodonga) fired the best round for the day with a three under 69. Zach’s round included three birdies in a row on holes 15, 16 & 17. Murray will also take the overnight lead in the Country Colts Championship.

Greg Wilson (Cerberus) & State Team member Frazer Droop (Yarrawonga)also  didn’t find it too challenging after both carded rounds of 70 (2 under). Wilson’s round included 6 birdies, with three either side.

Cooper Gill (Hamiliton) & Jamie Scapin (Mooroopna) lead in the Junior Championship, both carding 76’s.

Moderate winds made the afternoon a little difficult with the average score being 79 for round one. Player will conclude the Country Championships with their second and final round tomorrow morning. First group out is at 7:30am.
