The Australian Womensport and Recreation Association (AWRA)'s E-Mentoring Program is based on the premise that the success of any sporting organisation is largely reliant on the skills and attributes of staff. Sustaining success is influenced by the ability to provide a career path to senior management and leadership roles for experienced staff.
There is currently an under-representation of women working and volunteering in senior roles in sport. AWRA’s Mentoring Program is a practical way to encourage the participation women in the workforce and assist them to take the next step in their careers.
The program is suitable for women who are:
· middle managers
· elite athletes making a transition to a leadership role
· volunteers aspiring to State or National Boards and
· coaches and referees/officials looking to gain a high level accreditation.
Over the past three years, the Australian Sports Commission has supported AWRA to provide opportunities for over 100 women to form mentoring relationships with senior sport leaders. Organisations including Bowls Australia, Deaf Sports Australia, Gymnastics Australia, Special Olympics, National Rugby League, Netball Australia, Swimming Australia and Yachting Victoria enrolled women last year.
The program was a recent finalist in a national leadership award for Sustaining Women's Empowerment in Communities and Organisations (SWECO).
The program is delivered via one face-to-face workshop (held in capital cities) and webinar workshops covering topics including:
· How to be a good mentee
· Networking
· Making the most of your skills and experience and
· Determining your big picture
E-mentoring through on-line mentoring activities for mentees is available for those restricted by location to attend face-to-face meetings. Translation support is available for women with hearing impairments or language difficulties.
Places filled quickly and last year, the program was oversubscribed. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 5 August.
