Australia's Minjee Lee made a blazing start to the US Women's Open today, holing out for eagle on a par-four and leaping to second on the leaderboard.
Lee, the 20-year-old second-year professional, carded a five-under 67 at CordeValle in California.
The Western Australian, ranked 13th in the world, is three from the outright lead held by South Korea's Mirim Lee, who started with a 64.
World No. 1 Lydia Ko and No. 2 Brooke Henderson are completing their first rounds.
Lee, a member of Golf Australia's rookie squad of young professionals and an ALPG star, holed out for two at the par-four sixth hole, and hit it close on the par-four 11th to reach a share of the lead before being overrun in the later stages by Mirim Lee.
But the two-time LPGA Tour winner buried a long birdie putt from the fringe of the green at the final hole to leave a nice taste in her mouth for tomorrow's second round.
Veteran Aussie Karrie Webb, who needs a big finish this week to find a place on the Olympic Games team, began her Open with a 73, one-over par.
