Mixed news for Aussies at US Women’s Amateur

Kristie Smith has qualified for the match play rounds of the US Women&aposs Amateur but Alison Whitaker missed out by just one stroke at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana. Smith fired rounds of 74 and 75 to finish in a share of 40th place and move comfortably into the match play stage of the championship. Interrupted mid-way through the opening round due to weather, Smith was three-under through her opening seven holes but the delay seemed to stunt her momentum as three consecutive bogeys saw her drop back in the field when play resumed. The West Australian managed to hold her nerve, get through the second round with a 75 and progress into the next phase of the tournament. Fellow Australian Whitaker was not as fortunate, as a bogey on the final hole of stroke play cost her dearly. Whitaker posted a competitive total of 74 in the opening round but a 78 on the second day saw her miss the cut by just one shot. Click here for a full scoring summary
