For the second year running The Mornington Peninsula Senior Amateur has commenced in strong winds and rain. After play was delayed by 20 minutes, players headed out to their tee and braved the tough conditions seen at Flinders Golf Club.
Ken O’Brien is the round 1 leader in the men’s field after shooting a 5-over-par 74. Back-to-back birdies for O’Brien through holes 7 and 8 were crucial for the Rossdale Golf Club member and helped him to a 1 shot lead over Ian McCleary (Kooringal GC) and Alan Bullas (Portsea GC).
Denis Long (Metropolitan GC) finds himself atop of the leaderboard in the men’s nett competition, after finishing with nett 73 off a daily handicap of 11. He leads the Kooringal Golf Club duo of Ian Turnbull and Ian McCleary by 1.
The women’s scratch competition is wide open after many ladies struggled to shoot their best scores in the trying conditions. Tessa Fraser (Heritage GC) returned the best score for the day with 21 scratch stableford points and leads Sandra Collingwood (Keysborough GC) and Helen Pascoe (Buninyong GC) by 1.
Fraser also finds herself 3 shots clear in the women’s stableford competition after finishing with 29 stableford points off a daily handicap of 10. Sandra Collingwood is currently in second place after shooting 26 points off a daily handicap of 7.
Play will resume tomorrow at Portsea Golf Club at 8:00am. Fingers crossed that the weather produces a much friendlier day for round 2.
