The final round of the 2018 Mornington Peninsula Senior Amateur has been completed on a beautiful and crisp morning at Portsea Golf Club. The still conditions were a nice contrast to the extreme weather experienced at Flinders Golf Club yesterday that threatened to abandon play.
Peter Walsh from The Dunes GC took out the Men’s Gross Championship after his final round score of 75 helped him to victory on a countback over Ken O’Brien (Rossdale GC). “I knew I was going to be thereabouts but definitely did not expect to come out with the win,” said Walsh. After holding the round 1 lead, O’Brien finished with 78 at Portsea this morning to equal Walsh with a 36-hole total of 152.
In the Men’s Nett competition, Portsea Golf Club member Alan Bullas used his local knowledge in the final round to his advantage and finished with a nett total of 146 after 2 rounds. Denis Long (The Metropolitan GC) finished just 1 shot back with nett 147.
In the Women’s Scratch event, Helen Pascoe (Buninyong GC) recorded a come-from-behind victory to win by 6 scratch points over Tessa Fraser (The Heritage GC). Pascoe trailed Fraser after round 1 at Flinders but recorded 24 scratch points this morning to runaway as a clear winner.
Fraser played a very consistent tournament and managed to claim first prize in the Women’s Stableford competition by a staggering 8 points over Sue Lush (Gardiners Run GC) and Sandra Collingwood (Keysborough GC).
Thank you to all players for participating and making this a magnificent event. Both Portsea and Flinders Golf Clubs were presented in magnificent condition and were thoroughly enjoyed by all despite the unpleasant weather experienced on Monday. We hope to see many of you competing at upcoming tournaments including The National Senior Masters (April 10-12) and The Eureka Senior Amateur (April 17-18).
