Mowbray Golf Club has captured division one of the women’s state pennant finals conducted at the Ulverstone Golf Club last weekend. Sunday morning s preliminary final saw Tasmania defeat Smithton three matches to two to set up an afternoon final with Mowbray. Tasmania Golf Club’s wins went to Georgia Milbourne and Zahara Lemon playing at number two and three respectively, and Christine McKibben at number five. While Smithton Golf Club’s two victories went to Jackie Poke over Leslie Bick 3&2 and Tanya Brooks defeating Julia Goss 5&4. Mowbray conceded two games to Tasmania in the afternoon with Cheryl Richards losing to Georgia Milbourne 5&3 and Trudy Vance succumbing to Christine McKibben 1 down. For a victorious Mowbray, Maree Fish defeated Leslie Bick 3&2, Robyn Hatton beat Zahara Lemon at the nineteenth hole and Denise Burns overcame Julia Goss 5&4. Wynyard, Greens Beach and Riverside Golf Clubs picked up the remaining second, third and fourth divisions respectively. Monday morning saw Wynyard Golf Club defeat Riverside three matches to two in the second division. For Riverside, Liz Williams defeated Sandra Southwell 7&5 and Rose Searle beat Sharon Baker 2 up. Wynyard secured its first two wins with Vivien Hancock defeating Kate Collings 4&3 and Kaye Forsyth overcoming Margaret Bond 1 up. Wynyard Golf Club’s key win went to Cecily Palmer over Riverside s Kathy Allison in a nail biting finish with Palmer winning one up at the 19th hole. In the remaining finals Greens Beach defeated Devonport five matches to zero to claim division three. Victorious for Greens Beach were Jane Philpott, Rosanne Byrne, Joan Wesson, Helen Beams and Deb Curtis. While Riverside captured division four with a four matches to one victory over the North West Bay Golf Club. Best for Riverside Golf Club were Margaret Adlard, Kathryn Smalldon and Betty Piesse who all picked up wins. Halved matches for North West Bay went to Monica Turner and Sandy Michael playing in the number two and three positions respectively.
