Late Oct 2014, The Grange Golf Club contacted Golf South Australia to advise that Greg Norman’s mother Toini Norman was going to give the Golf SA Office a call, as Mrs Norman was after an image of Greg which appeared on the front cover of the SA Golfer magazine (November edition 1976).
Golf SA, previously known as The South Australian Golf Association, at the time used to produce a monthly local golf magazine, which was The SA Golfer.
After searching through the archives the Golf SA office was able to find the Nov 76 magazine with the image of Greg on the front cover, holding the winners cheque after earning his first professional victory as a 21 year old, in the 1976 West Lakes Classic at The Grange Golf Club (East Course).
When Mrs Norman called she was delighted Golf SA was able to find the image.
Incredibly, Mrs Norman explained to Golf SA that she still had the green shirt Greg wore on the final day of the Classic from 1976 and now with the photo wanted to surprise Greg for his 60th birthday (on 10 February 2015) with a framed print honouring his first pro win in Adelaide at The Grange.
Golf SA arranged for the magazine to be digitally remastered and sent the pictures to Mrs Norman.
“We had given the shirt and pictures to Greg’s wife Kirsten on the quiet, when Greg and Kirsten were here just before Christmas, and Kirsten had it framed over there. It was only delivered to the house while I was there the day before Greg’s birthday on the 10th. Yes he did like it, was tickled pink in fact, if you don’t mind me putting it like that.” Mrs Norman explained.
The Grange Golf Club which is a private 36-hole course in Adelaide, South Australia continues its connection with Greg Norman to this day with Norman recently redeveloping the East Course.
The Grange Golf Club – East Course was built in the mid 1960's with little updating or renovation. The greens were in need of replacement and the club faced the decision to replace the greens only or to take the opportunity to engage a professional golf course designer to provide a comprehensive Master Plan for the East Course. The committee agreed to fully redevelop and interviewed five different golf course architects and unanimously chose Greg Norman Golf Course Design in the autumn of 2010. The Course was officially opened in January 2013.
