Mt Pleasant GC wins the Mid North Women’s Pennants

Story by Lesley Montfort

Mt Pleasant Golf won the Women’s Mid North Pennant Competition for 2016 on a count-back to Penfield Golf Club.  Eight Clubs in the Mid North competed in the Women’s Pennant Competition and throughout the season team positions on the ladder meant that the last match, held at Tanunda Pines Golf Club, was going to be the 'real decider'.

After the first week being cancelled due to extreme hot weather, matches held at Highercombe Golf Club proved that each of the clubs entered were fairly even in terms of competiveness.  Highercombe and Tanunda Pines Golf Clubs completed the day ranked 1st, but there wasn't much of difference between them and the rest of the Clubs.

While Highercombe continued each week to stay at the top of the rankings, Mt Pleasant who were ranked last the first week with Kapunda, slowly made their way up the ladder each week with small and large victories.

Penfield ranked equal second the first week dropped slightly down the rankings but stayed middle of the pack.  Mt Pleasant and Highercombe were equal first with 2 weeks to go, while Penfield had enough wins to keep them in range of the top.  The following week Mt Pleasant were on top of the ladder by one point to Highercombe, in comparison Tanunda Pines Golf Club (with a team of 10 women willing to play for their club) slowly dropped to back of the pack.

The final match, held at Tanunda Pines was highly successful, especially for Penfield who after beating Kapunda, were equal first with Mt Pleasant, who squared with Sandy Creek on the day.  Barossa Valley, were also slowly climbing the ladder, and get above Highercombe whom they won against on the day.

The difference between the top and lower ranking teams for the season was very close and made for an exciting finish to the Women's Pennant Season 2016 for the clubs in the Mid North.  All the clubs are looking forward to another close challenge next year.

Congratulations to Mt Pleasant who after being declared winners through a count-back, with the assistance of Phil Roberts, Golf Operations Manager at Tanunda Pines, the Mt Pleasant players were presented the trophy by Gloria Potter, Assistant Secretary for the MId North District Association.
