Mudgee make pennant history

Mudgee golfers are celebrating after taking out the club's first Central West District Golf Association Division One Pennant title in their 109-year history.

The team of Matt Consadine, Mark Hale, Rob Penman, Andrew Best and Josh Campbell, (with the support of non-playing team mates Matt Stanley, Craig Golledge and Brad Paine) got the better of their more fancied opponents Duntryleague Golf Club of Orange in the final winning 3 matches to 2.

While Hale and Consadine were unlucky losing their matches to Duntryleagues’ James Conran and Rob Payne 3/2 and 2/1 respectively, the wins of Josh Campbell over Tyson Lane 3/2, Andrew Best over Dave Corby 2/1 got them back into the match.

The highlight of the victory however, was Rob Penman over Corey McKenzie 1 up that cemented Mudgee's first ever pennant title.

"It was pretty dramatic with Rob going down 18. He thought his ball was out-of-bounds and when he got to it, you could see it was about a metre in and his oppontent's ball was about a metre out. We All got a bit excited then!" Mudgee's Mark Hale said.

"It was an unbelievable feeling to win the club's very first Division One Pennant."

After the historic result, the celebrations back at Mudgee Golf Club went long into the night.

“The club is over the moon. There were lots of people back here at the club to celebrate. It was a great feeling,” says Mudgee Club General Manager Ray Duncan.

“They celebrated pretty hard.”

It’s a positive sign for the Central West club, and Mr Duncan could only see good things happening for the club as a result of the win.

“A win like this will make us a better, stronger club. Our golf program is going very well at the moment.”

“It can only help us build our standing in the community and help us grow.”
