Muirfield may revisit vote on women members

Muirfield has announced it wants to have a fresh ballot over the admission of female members, after widespread outrage about the failure of the first vote this year.

The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers has called a special general meeting to seek authority from current members to hold the fresh vote.

The club has been pilloried since the first vote six weeks ago was lost 64 percent to 36 percent, with the R and A announcing that Muirfield would not be part of the Open Championship roster anymore, and various high-profile golfers and political figures denouncing the decision.

The club captain, Henry Fairweather said:  “A substantial majority of our members voted for change and many have voiced their disappointment with the ballot result and with subsequent events. The club committee believes that a clear and decisive vote in favour of admitting women as members is required to enable us to begin the task of restoring the reputation of the club that has been damaged by the earlier ballot outcome on May 19.”

Royal Troon, which is hosting this year's Open Championship,  is having a ballot on 1 July on female membership.
