MyGolf Centre of the Month: June 2016

Congratulations to Rowes Bay Golf Club, the June 2016 MyGolf Centre of the Month winner.

Situated between Townsville’s beachfronts and conservation parklands, Rowes Bay has run four MyGolf programs over the past 18 months, including a school holiday MyGolf camp that recently boasted 32 participants.

Rowes Bay has demonstrated dramatic growth in participant numbers, increasing its program capacity from 11 participants earlier in the year. These numbers highlight the hard work and passion for the game from program co-ordinator Matthew McCarthy and PGA professional David Lord.

Under the guidance of Matt and David, junior golf has become a popular sport at Rowes Bay on a Saturday morning, with the recent introduction of a Wednesday afternoon clinic proving even more successful.

Rowes Bay is trialling Big Hole Golf to assist juniors and beginners to gain more of a handle on the game.

“This concept has proved to be a hit, with the juniors loving it. Two of them have already boasted a hole-in-one!” David said.

David and Matt have also adopted a unique junior Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) program. This program involves promoting skills development by introducing juniors to activities such as balance beams and blocks, skipping, hopping and throwing.

The FMS aims to promote timing and body movement for the important technical aspects of golf, all while having fun.

Visiting juniors were also impressed by their skill development with the FMS program – and with a barbecue each day, the camp was enjoyed by all.

Golf Queensland development officer Scott Simons said the camp had been “awesome”.

“The juniors were well behaved and had a ball, and the Big Hole Golf was a huge hit. Kids were getting putts in from everywhere, which certainly built up their confidence,” he said.

Congratulations again to Rowes Bay Golf Club.

The entire MyGolf team looks forward to assisting your club to provide such successful programs in the future.

Keep up the great work!
