The 2012 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open produced one of the most thrilling finishes ever seen at the event, but it didn t generate nearly as much excitement as the MYGolf Junior Clinics held at the practice fairway on Thursday and Friday afternoon! Laura Diaz was the special guest at Thursday s clinic and along with Brad James, Golf Australia s High Performance Director, and National Squad members Ashlee Dewhurst and Jaimee Dougan gave the kids in attendance some valuable tips and tricks to help them improve their golf. Laura then demonstrated how she hits various shots before a youngster from the clinic was invited to challenge her to a longest drive contest with a twist Laura had to hit the ball whilst kneeling! After Laura returned to the clubhouse, Ashlee and Jaimee were on hand to showcase a few of their different shots and Jaimee also found herself challenged to a longest drive contest from a young participant! On Friday, 100 kids from all over Victoria, as well as a few visitors from interstate, gathered at the practice fairway for their chance to get close to one of Australia s greatest golfers, and MYGolf ambassador, Karrie Webb. Whilst Karrie was still finishing her second round, all the clinic participants had a chance to be involved in a mini MYGolf Skills Challenge involving three of the program s mantras; Chip It, Fly It and Rip It. Decked out in their MYGolf hats, the kids were split into groups where they were able to showcase their skills and get some tips from Golf Australia and Golf Victoria coaches and staff whilst competing against each other for some wonderful prizes at the same time. After finishing her round and ensuring she had made the cut, Karrie Webb came straight from the course to the practice fairway to spend time with some very excited young golfers. Karrie spoke about her week so far and what she hoped to get out of the weekend as well as what it takes to be at the top of the sport for so long. Questions were thrown up from the captive audience, including a cheeky, Can you hit the ball Happy Gilmore style? before Karrie headed back into the clubhouse to begin her preparations for the weekend, but making sure she signed autographs for some lucky young golfers on her way out of the clinic.
