To encourage MYGolf Juniors to maintain their enthusiasm and approach to golf, Patterson River Golf Club has introduced an Under 14 year old membership category to allow these keen juniors to be part of the club and play on the course strictly under the supervision of a responsible adult. With a membership of just $50 per year, each registered U14 year old, MYGolf Junior, can register to join. The membership fee covers their insurance whilst they are on the course and they get the right to play Sunday Fridays after 4:00pm Teaching Professional at the club, Paul Boxall has been working with the MYGolf programme since its inception and as well as regular weekly clinics for the juniors, Paul has been running school holiday clinics and visiting various schools in the south-eastern region of Melbourne giving school time clinics. All these have proved very successful and Paul, together with PRGC general manager Pam Carpenter, now feels the time is right to continue this good work and help maintain the enthusiasm of the juniors by opening this membership category. Many of the club s junior golfers have been assisting Paul with the School Holiday Clinics and as Paul explains, this helps the younger golfers form a peer relationship with the older juniors and is an important step in their golf development, keeping them involved until they are ready for full junior membership. Patterson River Club Juniors such as Zoe Larrieu, Arielle and Kasey Cathcart and Tayla Derek have all progressed through the junior clinics and some are now representing the State at Junior Level Golf. Paul plans to run junior competitions on the last Sunday of every month where they will play a number of holes on the course with various challenges to test the skills they have learnt within the clinics. These competitions, commencing at 4:00pm, will have an entry of $5 to help cover the cost of prizes. Non members will also be able to take part at a cost of $10 with the hope that involvement will lead to them joining up as members. Paul believes that it is important to keep these junior golfers challenged and maintain their interest in the sport, plus you never know we might get a few of their non golfing parents also interested, and that can t be a bad thing.
