Nail biting finish to the 2012 Victorian Senior Amateur Championship

Peter King from the Windaroo Lakes (QLD) Golf Club has won the 2012 Victorian Senior Amateur Championship following a sudden death playoff after the final round was played over the Rosebud Country Club on Wednesday October 24th.

Peter King and Rick Oliver (Young) finished tied for the lead on 225 after 54 holes, both shooting a four-over par final round 75. King and Oliver managed to hit the 348m – par 4 – 18th hole in regulation, but with Oliver three putting for bogey it was an easy two putt for King to be crowned the 2012 Champion.

King started the day four shots behind the overnight leader, Kevin Skehan who struggled today with 89 to finish tied 13th.  The 61-year-old Queenslander managed to fire rounds of 76-74-75 for a three round total of 12-over-par. Graham Bowen (Mandura) narrowly missed out on the playoff with King and Oliver, finishing on 226 after an excellent level par-71 this afternoon.  Past winner, Michael Jackson (Yarra Yarra) was two shots adrift on a total of 227. Defending champion Stefan Albinski finished tied 7th, a further five shots back from King and Oliver.

The final round of the nett section saw Michael Jackson notch out Kingswood member Peter Bence on a count-back to take Victorian Senior Handicap Championship with a three round total of 215. The four marker fired an opening and closing rounds of 71 nett, and 73 nett in his second round. In third was Ignatius Duivenvoorden of Yarram with a 54 hole total of 216, just shot behind the victor.

However, the shot of the day belonged to Eastern’s Andrew Hansen who had a hole-in-one on the 133 metre – par 3 – fourth hole. Using a nine iron, Hansen struck the perfect shot that landed just short of the hole and calmly rolled into the hole to achieve his fourth hole in one.
