National-Huntingdale merger collapses

The trumpeted merger between The National and Huntingdale, two of greater Melbourne’s biggest and best clubs, has fallen over.

National members were informed today that the merger, first mooted in November, would not be going ahead.

The boards of both clubs actively met over a merger but could not come to an agreement over the terms.

This raises the question of whether The National, the biggest club in Australia, will look to reach a partnership with another Melbourne club.

It has already merged with Long Island Country Club in Frankston, on Melbourne’s southern outskirts, in 2015.

The National’s board has made no secret of the fact that it wants a Melbourne venue for its members to go with the three courses at its original Cape Schanck site as well as Long Island.
