West Australian Hira Naveed has gained automatic selection on the International team for the 23rd Arnold Palmer Cup in June.
The Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style tournament between Team USA and an International side, with 12 male and 12 female collegiate golfers on each team.
Until 2018 the Arnold Palmer Cup was played only by the best male collegiate golfers representing the US and Europe.
The International team made its debut in 2018, with a women’s component to the event also included for the first time.
Naveed, who attends and plays collegiate golf at Pepperdine University, qualified as the third-ranked player on the International women’s team, behind World No. 8 Frida Kinhult of Sweden and World No. 3 Patty Tavatanakit of Thailand.
Now a senior, World No. 96 Naveed has enjoyed a breakout year on the college scene, winning twice and recording a further nine top 20 finishes around the world in 2018.
The women's International team boasts four of the top eight players on the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Victorian Gabi Ruffels, who is in her second year at University of Southern California, was unlucky to miss out on one of the four committee picks after sitting at 14th on the rankings at the cutoff date.
The 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup will be played at The Alotian Club in Arkansas from June 7-9.
Last year’s Arnold Palmer Cup was won by Team USA in France, the Americans saluting 38.5 to 21.5 at Evian Resort Golf Club.
