Neeson & Noy shine at Sorrento

Blustery winter-like conditions swept through Sorrento GC this afternoon for the first round of the Sorrento Senior Amateur. Players were challenged with gale-force winds and sporadic bouts of hail on the par 70 layout, and should be commended on braving the weather to complete their rounds.

The scores across the board were a sound reflection of the extreme difficulty of today’s playing conditions, with John Neeson of Catalina was the only player out of the 105 man field to score in the 70s. Neeson carded a very respectable 78 off the stick to be leading from Cobram-Barooga’s Ross Percy on 80.

John Noy of Metropolitan had an exceptional day, returning a nett 69 (gross 86) off a handicap of 17 to be clubhouse leader in the handicap event. Following closely, both with nett 72s, are John Fisher of Royal Melbourne (also a local member of Sorrento) and Ian Kelley from Rosanna, off handicaps of 9 and 13 respectively.

The Victorian Senior Club Teams Championship is being run in conjunction with the Sorrento Senior Amateur. Players chose their teams of 3 from each club, from which the aggregate scores of the team are taken to combine for gross and nett totals. Leading the gross event are the team from The National (Tony Briers, John Wheeler, & Adrian Barr) with an aggregate score of 256. In the nett event, Rosanna Team C (Mike Ball, Reg Mullins, & Daryl Colee) are in the lead with an aggregate score of 236.

The Tournament Dinner is held at the club tonight, which incorporates the presentation of the winners of the 2013 Doug Bachli Trophy and 2013 Senior Handicap Trophy. Paul Bachli (son of Doug Bachli) is the honorary guest in attendance.

Round 2 commences at 8.30am tomorrow morning.
