New Zealand takes commanding lead

courtesy: NZ Golf. New Zealand take a commanding lead into today&aposs final day of the Trans- Tasman Seniors golf international against Australia in Christchurch. The Kiwi combination lead 8 matches to 3 after two rounds of foursomes and fourball play at Clearwater Resort. New Zealand made a powerful start when they dominated the morning foursomes, winning 4 to 1 . The wins for New Zealand were led by the pairings of Ian Donaldson (Canterbury) – Eric Brodie (Taupo) and Arthur Parkin (Auckland) Andrew McKechnie who both won over their Australian rivals 5 and 4. Phil Mosley (North Harbour) and Murray Martin (Taranaki) enjoyed a 2 and 1 win while Canterbury s John Sanders drained a 24m monster birdie putt on the 18th hole with Ron Olivecrona (Wellington) to grab a 1-up victory over John Beaumont (South Australia) and Grahame MacDonald (Queensland). Ross Percy (Victoria) and Brian Sams (NSW) grabbed Australia s only with the Wellington pair of Rodney Barltrop and Frank Borren halving their match with the New South Wales combination of Stefan Albinski and Greg Corben. New Zealand, who won the Sanctuary Cove Cup across theTasman last year, rammed home their advantage with a 4-2 advantage in the afternoon fourball. Barltrop, teaming with Sanders, started in hot form when he holed a 3-iron on the first hole for an eagle, and the pair followed with three birdies in the next four holes on their way to a 2 and 1 win. Mosley and Brodie were also in devastating form with eight birdies between them in winning 6 and 4, with the other New Zealand wins to Parkin and Martin 2 and 1 and Donaldson and McKechnie, who won the last for a 1-up victory. Australia s two wins went to Percy and Sams 2 and 1 and Albinski and Corben 4 and 3. The contest will be decided with 12 singles matches, made in a special draw by Sir Bob Charles, with Australia requiring eight wins to take the cup back across the Tasman.
