Six ALPG Members recently participated in the third Avenues Invitational Charity Golf Day to raise funds for the two benefiting charities – the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Fiona Pike Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign.

rnNancy Harvey, Joanne Mills, Carmen Hajjar, Jenny Sevil, Tamara Beckett and Corinne Dibnah, along with ALPG Chief Executive Officer, Warren Sevil, put their support behind the ALPG’s official charity when they teamed up with friends and sponsors at the Emerald Lakes Golf Club on Queensland’s Gold Coast two weeks ago.

rnBreast cancer survivor and friend to the ALPG and many of its members, Annette Anning, affectionately known as “Annie,” instigated the charity golf day whilst she was recovering from treatment some 3 years ago. With the support of City Subaru, JB Air, Eagers Mitsubishi, family and friends, Annette raised $6,467.00, half of which will be presented to Fiona Pike’s family who, together with ALPG Members, continue to promote the sun smart message which will remain Fiona’s legacy.

rnIn addition to the participation of ALPG Members, profile players Katherine Hull and Karrie Webb donated items which went to auction for the fundraiser. Other donated items included Yani Tseng’s winner’s cheques from both the 2011 Women’s Australian Open and ANZ Ladies Masters.

rnSpeaking on the success of the golf day and her commitment to supporting the event, Anning said, “I am humbled by the generosity of the ALPG players and the many friends who commit their time and hard earned dollars to ensure Fiona’s campaign and the NBCF continue their exceptional work to prevent skin cancer and breast cancer. I am sure with the continued support from the ALPG and others, that next year’s charity golf day will be another huge success. Watch this space!”

rnAt the 20111 Handa Women’s Australian Open, Anning presented the Pike family with a cheque for $3,500 and intends to do the same at the 2012 Royal Melbourne hosted event.
rnEarlier this year, the ALPG Tour raised a sum of $4,535.00 for the charity through the “Birdies for Charity” initiative conducted at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open and ANZ Ladies Masters tournaments.

rnThe Fiona Pike Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign was initiated by Fiona in 2008 with the backing of Cancer Council SA. As a professional golfer and ALPG member, Fiona travelled the world playing on tours in Australia, Europe and America. Shortly after retiring as a player in 2005, she was diagnosed with a deep, skull-based melanoma. She battled a major operation and ongoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy over three years. Tragically, Fiona passed away in March 2009, aged 44. Her Campaign aims to raise awareness about skin cancer and the steps we can take to reduce the risk.
