In golf, the talent pool is starting earlier and earlier and 9 year- old Victorian Karl Vilips is no exception. Vilips won the 2009 US Kids World Championship in the 7 year-old division and finished runner-up in 2010 in a play-off for the Callaway Future Champions of Golf Championship in the 8 year-old division. Before he&aposd reached double figures (in age terms), he&aposd won overseas. Back in Melbourne, Vilips made his Colts Division 1 (U21) pennant debut for Southern Golf Club at the start of May. In that pennant match against Victoria Golf Club, Karl played at number five and squared his match with his 19 year-old opponent, despite being able to reach only some of the par 4s in regulation. Vilips three putted the second last hole to go 1 down but holed a nice putt on the final hole to square the result. Joint Golf Victoria CEO David Greenhill said he could not remember a younger player involved in Colts Pennant. “From my 20 years in Victorian golf, this is the youngest player that I can remember competing in Victorian Colts Pennant.,” Mr Greenhill said. Part of the club&aposs junior development program, Vilips is currently playing off 13. His best score to date is a 7-over par 79 on Southern&aposs par 72 layout during their annual ANZAC Day competition.
