No Miracle for Sim or Lyle

Stephen Ames collected his first title in over 18 months by shooting a four-under-par 68 on day four of the Children&aposs Miracle Network Classic as Australians Michael Sim and Jarrod Lyle missed out on gaining provisional cards for next year&aposs PGA Tour. Canadian Ames, though, came away with his first title since the Players Championship in March 2006 by clinging to a one-shot advantage at Florida&aposs Lake Buena Vista course following three straight birdies beginning at the 13th. In all, Ames finished with five birdies and a bogey en route to completing the event at 17-under 271, one shot clear of South Africa&aposs Tim Clark. Clark fired a final-round 66 that included all six of his birdies in an eight-hole span starting at the ninth. It was the third runner-up finish this season for Clark. Ames&apos ability to come up with shots despite the charge by Clark was nothing like the end of Saturday&aposs round, when the 43-year-old had a pair of late bogeys to fall into a tie for the lead with Scott Verplank. Verplank had a one-under 71 today to finish in a three-way tie for third with Tag Ridings (70) and Robert Gomez (68). The best of the Australians overall was Matthew Goggin (75) who finished the tournament at eight-under-par overall, nine strokes adrift of Ames after a relatively poor final day. Goggin was still three-strokes ahead of Lyle (71) and four in front of Sim (75) after the final round had finished. However, it was a particularly disappointing weekend for those two players as a top 10 finish could have potentially moved them into the top 150, securing them a provisional card on the PGA Tour for 2008. For Sim, such a position appeared improbable just a fortnight ago, but his top 10 result in the Ginn sur Mer Classic gave him the opportunity to press for finishing between 125 and 150 on the PGA Tour&aposs Prize, with such a position securing the Australian a Provisional card as only the top 125 are provided with full cards. Sim, though, had to settle for 162 while Lyle finished in 164, forcing both players to contemplate a return to the Nationwide Tour. However, it was not all bad luck for the Australians as Gavin Coles managed to hold onto his provisional card after finishing at 147 on the Prize Money list despite missing the cut at this tournament.
