Norman to captain Internationals

Fred Couples and Greg Norman have been named captains for the 2009 Presidents Cup, the PGA announced on Tuesday. Couples will guide the United States team while Norman will head the International squad in the biennial competition. The 2009 Presidents Cup takes place at the Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco. Couples takes over for Jack Nicklaus and Norman replaces Gary Player. “I am absolutely delighted to introduce these two great players as the new Presidents Cup captains,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said. “While it may not be easy to replace two legends as Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, I know both Fred and Greg step into this role with strong passion.” The United States has a 5-1-1 lead in the competition which debuted in 1994. As a player, Couples posted a 9-5-2 record in the Presidents Cup, with Norman logging a 7-6-1 mark. “It&aposs truly an honour to be named US captain and I have the challenge of following in the steps of Jack Nicklaus, Ken Venturi, Arnold Palmer and Hale Irwin,” Couples said. Norman added: “I very much look forward to the opportunity and challenge of serving as captain for the international team.” “I have fond memories of the Presidents Cup as a participant.”
