Norris back on track to success

After growing up in Chadstone, Victoria and developing his game at Spring Valley Golf Club, Jason Norris moved to Adelaide where he has been based for the past 12 years.

Dividing his time between The Grange where he practises mainly and Glenelg Golf Club where he is also a member, Norris has some big tournament wins under his belt.

In 2007 Norris won both the WA PGA Championship and NSW Open but not long after suffered horrific facial injuries in a bicycle accident while playing the PGA on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

It took Norris several months before he would be playing again and even longer before he could be considered competitive.

In 2010 though, Norris hit back playing superbly to win the Victorian Open his third victory in 72-hole professional tournaments and in 2012 finished tied second in the BMW New Zealand Open earning a considerable pay cheque.

In February 2013 after leading the Queensland PGA with opening rounds of 60-66, bad luck hit Norris again, as he was struck down by illness contracting meningitis. After suffering a migraine during his second round, Norris withdraw heading straight to hospital and subsequently spent a week there in Toowoomba. The illness set him back two to three months and then fitness another month or so after that.

Fast forward to 2014 and despite a few injury battles Norris appears to be back on track.

“I injured my back and hamstrings about a month and a half ago and they were ordinary for a month, but it’s just coming good now.” Norris said.

“At the Perth International I finished 23rd and did okay, last week I struggled a bit and was a bit tight again, but it was just coming good Sunday.  “I played really well but didn’t putt to well but I've just got a new putter this week, so it’s looking good.”

Norris has always worked with David Capaldo at Kingswood Golf Club, in Melbourne and Rod Butchers has been caddying for him since 2006.

Norris finished tied 36th in last year’s Australian Open at 1-under carding rounds of 67-76-74-70.

“The course is in super condition, I’m playing well and I feel good this week, so it should be nice. I’m first off in the afternoon a couple of groups in front of Adam Scott on Thursday so that will be nice”.

Along with other Grange members in the field Norris has been buoyed by Nick Cullen’s Australian Masters win.

“We do a lot of practise together; Nick is the sort of bloke who plays with everyone at Grange.

“We’re pretty even standard and to watch him win sort of fires you up a bit, makes you realise he’s the same as us and anyone can do it”.

“You just have to put it all together on the week, and hit a great bunker shot on the last and you can win!”
