Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, today announced funding for over 160 local sports groups across NSW to improve sporting facilities and establish programs to increase participation in physical activity. It’s critically important quality sporting and recreational facilities are accessible and complemented with well-run programs if we are to encourage people to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle, Mr Annesley said. The funding comes from Round Two of the NSW Government s Participation and Facility Grant Program, Mr Annesley said. Some of the great examples of facilities and programs receiving funding include:
- Barwon Aboriginal Corporation: Encouraging participation in golf and boxing
- Dunedoo Sports Club Limited: Purchase of a ride on mower for Dunedoo Golf Course
- Inverell Golf Club Limited: Women in Life and Sport Program: Increasing physical activity in rural communities
- Upgrade of the Castle Hill BMX Club bike track surface
- Installation of a new all-abilities outdoor gym at Northey Park, Inverell
- Surf sports for disadvantaged youth at Warilla
- Helping dementia patients in the Port Macquarie area to participate in physical activity
- Swimming awareness and development in Liverpool
- Soccer programs for refugees in Newcastle
- Dance classes for Aboriginal girls in the Penrith area.
I m very passionate about ensuring opportunities are provided for as many people as possible to obtain the benefits derived from living an active, healthy lifestyle. Being physically active is not only excellent for health and well-being, but also delivers substantial social benefits and brings communities together. The NSW Government is also committed to providing seniors, people with a disability and groups facing barriers to participating, with greater options to get involved, Mr Annesley added.
