TERRITORY golf has jumped to the front of the queue by quickly embracing Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia’s historic joint-venture agreement aimed at boosting the landscape of junior golf development in Australia.
Under the agreement, the PGA and Golf Australia will endorse and promote a single junior development program called MyGolf.
It will be the nationally recognised junior golf program that will act as the main driver of junior participation in Australia in the same vein as Auskick in Australian football and In2Cricket.
GolfNT’s operations manager Brett Rankin hopes to have the program in place at clubs across the NT from mid-July, almost two months before our southern counterparts.
Representatives from Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia will be in Darwin on May 27 to present the new format to GolfNT’s administration and its clubs.
In the past both the PGA and Golf Australia promoted and delivered separate junior development programs.
The joint venture was created in an effort to both unite the Australian golfing industry under one brand and reduce duplication when introducing young people to golf.
THIS year’s Emirates Australian Open will be played at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney from November 27-30.
The first Open at the old course since 2007 when Craig “Popeye’’ Parry lifted the Stonehaven Cup, the championship will be the penultimate event on the 2014 PGA Tour of Australasia.
Did you know the first Open championship was held at The Australian 110 years ago and the “Golden Bear’’ Jack Nicklaus won three of his six titles there?
The list of Open champions who’ve tamed the course includes Greg Norman, David Graham, Kel Nagle and Parry.
DARWIN Golf Club has a busy month of May ahead of it with the women contesting the senior and junior NT titles from May 16-18 and the men and junior boys in action from May 29 to June 1.
Humpty Doo Golf Club will have its days in the sun when the 36-hole Allied Pickfords Humpty Doo Open is contested on May 24-25. There is a 112-player limit on the Open, with entries closing on May 21. Late entries may be accepted depending on the numbers.
