NZ defeats Aus in Sanctuary Cove Trophy

New Zealand has proven too strong again for Australia in the Sanctuary Cove Trophy.

Played at Christchurch Golf Club, the Australian team of Stefan Albinski (NSW), Ken Brewer (NSW), Gordon Claney (Vic), Paul Chappell (WA), Geoff Cranfield (NSW), John Davey (SA), Brad Dowling (Qld), Ian Frost (Vic), Kym Olsen (Vic), Lester Peterson (NSW), Greg Rhodes (Vic) and Steve Toyne (Qld) went into the final day’s individual matches trailing by three points.

They needed something special and nearly pulled it off winning the singles matches 7 matches to 5. Unfortunately, New Zealand’s earlier results in the foursomes and fourball matches were enough to win the trophy 12.5 matches to Australia’s 11.5 matches.

The Sanctuary Cove Trophy has been played since 2007 between 12-man senior teams from New Zealand and Australia. This is New Zealand’s 8th victory since the event’s inception.
