Ken O’Brien and Wendy Muller have claimed the Men’s and Women’s Surfcoast Senior Amateur Championships.
The 2013 Surfcoast Senior Amateur concluded this morning after the second and final round was played over The Sands – Torquay Golf Club.
This year’s event marks the first time in Golf Victoria’s short history where women have contested simultaneously alongside the men.
After trailing by six shots heading into the final round, Rossdale member, Ken O’Brien, was able to improve on his opening round 80 and fired a final round 3 over-par 75 to take out this year’s event on a two round total of 155.
The 56 year old was able to notch out the ever consistent John Keller on a countback to narrowly claim the 2013 title. Yarra Yarra member and first round leader, Guy Krall, rounded out third following rounds of 74 and 82 to sit a single shot behind the champion.
The women’s section was fiercely contested in its inaugural year and local member, Wendy Muller, took the title with 68 Stableford points. Muller shot rounds of 29 and 39 points to finsh a comfortable six points clear of Glenda Kelly from Warragul. Carol McDonald was a further a point in arrears on 60 stableford points.
Meanwhile, Mike McAllum took the honors in the nett component of the men’s section with rounds of 66 and 73 nett off a handicap of 16. The Sands-Torquay member bettered his handicap by five strokes for the duration of the event to take victory by a barnstorming seven shots. Freddy Barton was runner-up on 146.
Many of the competitors will now make the short trip to Lonsdale Golf Club for their annual Senior tournament that commences on the afternoon of Thursday 14 February.
