Oates Vic Open receives election boost

Leader of the Opposition Daniel Andrews announced today that an elected Labor Government will increase funding by $1.4 million to the Oates Victorian Open over the next four years.

Making the announcement at host venue Thirteenth Beach Golf Links, Andrews stated, “Labor’s plan is about creating more local jobs, bringing more tourists to the region, attracting more international interest and making the Open one of Australia’s leading sporting events.”

“I love golf, but I also love the Bellarine Peninsula. With beautiful sights and friendly towns on the fringes of a proud city, it’s the future of our tourism industry.”

“I can’t wait to take my kids down to Barwon Heads next year to watch some of the world’s best players tee off on one of the country’s best courses in one of my favourite parts of the world.”

As the only men’s and women’s professional golf tournament in the world played simultaneously, the Oates Victorian Open has attracted over 250 players, 300 volunteers and 20,000 spectators throughout the four-day event since locating to Thirteenth Beach Golf Links in 2013.

Simon Brookhouse, Golf Victoria CEO welcomed the news, “Golf Victoria greatly appreciates the bi-partisan support which the political parties provide to golf and specifically the Oates Victorian Open.”

“With men & women competing together and the exceptional interest the unique event has generated in national and world golf, Golf Victoria is strongly committed to further developing the Championship.”

“We’re therefore encouraged by today’s announcement of Labor’s election commitment to the Oates Victorian Open, which will be played at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links from Thursday 5th through Sunday 8th February 2015.”
