O’Brien Triumphant at Lonsdale

The second and final round of the 2015 Lonsdale Senior Amateur concluded today at the Lonsdale Golf Club with the field of fifty four men & fourteen women enjoying two days of fine golfing weather on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The scene was set for a tight tussle in the final round with three players sharing the overnight lead. At the conclusion of play it was Rossdale local Ken O’Brien who took a stranglehold on the title with a brilliant final round of one under par 70 for a two round total of 142 to run away with the event by five strokes.

O’Brien has been a consistent performer to start the year with a number of high finishes in the Doug Bachli calendar events culminating in today’s deserving victory. Greg Welsh (Colac) finished second to O’Brien after also firing a fine final round of one over par 72 to finish on a two round total of 148 with Alan Buckley (Commonwealth) finishing third with a two round total of 150.

Not to be out done was David Taylor (Commonwealth) who recorded a final round of 68 nett to take the handicap title with a two round total of 137 nett playing from a handicap of five. Taylor remained consistent over the two days after a round one nett score of 69 had him nicely positioned heading into the final round.

John Wheeler also enjoyed a fine event finishing second with a two round nett total of 140 off a handicap of 4 with Elroy Lim (The Heritage) taking home third place on a countback with a two round nett total of 141 off a handicap of 16.

In the women’s title, Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) finished on top with a two round total of 160 with Maryanne Elson (The Dunes) finishing second after rounds of 84 & 88 to give her a two round total of 172. Pascoe has now added the Lonsdale title to her Moyne Senior Classic title won in late 2014 after two strong performances.

An exciting finish in the women’s stableford section saw Diane Baskett (Warragul) finish over the top of overnight leader Lyn Thompson (Angelsea) to take the title on a countback. Both ladies finished on a two round total of 67 stableford points playing from handicaps of 25 & 29 respectively.

A huge thank you to all the staff at the Lonsdale Golf Club for welcoming the players & once again coordinating a fantastic event.

Next stop on the senior’s calendar is the Kooringal Senior Amateur Tuesday 17- Wednesday 18 February followed by the Cranbourne Senior Amateur Monday 2- Tuesday 3 March.
