A swing change that’s feeling more natural has catapulted Su Oh to a season-best fourth place on the LPGA Tour.
The young Melburnian carded an equal day’s best 64 to close the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan in fine style, scything through the field en route to her second largest pay day as a pro.
Oh, who recently turned 21, ripped off six birdies in racing from 18th overnight to a share of fourth, three shots shy of champion Brooke Henderson and just one adrift of runners-up Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie.
And capping another solid week, Queenslander Sarah Jane Smith carded a 70 to finish T37. Remarkably, Smith, who’s now up to 34th on Race to the CME Globe points, has not missed a cut for almost 14 months in which time her world ranking has risen to a career-high 78.
Olympian Oh, who hasn’t had her greatest season statistically, moved back up to No.62 on that list, proving her work with Texas-based Australian coach Cameron McCormick is on track.
Oh, a Golf Australia rookie squad member, began working Jordan Spieth’s coach McCormick last year, but spent three weeks trying to bed down a less vertical swing plane over Christmas.
There have been glimpses of its progress in recent weeks, but it really bore fruit today with an $US85,754 cheque the immediate reward.
It’s her second best result on the LPGA Tour behind last year’s runner-up finish at the Kingsmill Championship.
