Australia's young superstar Su Oh recorded her first-ever top-10 finish in a major with a solid final round in KPMG Women's PGA Championship near Seattle today, but the implications are even more significant.
Oh, the 20-year-old from Melbourne, will be close to overtaking Karrie Webb in the top two Aussies in the world rankings tomorrow, after she finished tied-eighth in the season's second major.
A member of Golf Australia's rookie squad of young professionals, Oh is having a breakout year.
With rounds of 73-69-72-70 at Sahalee Country Club, the Metropolitan Golf Club youngster was just a handful of shots behind the players who went into a playoff, Canada's Brooke Henderson and world No 1 Lydia Ko.
Before the tournament she was ranked 62nd in the world, 11 places behind Webb in No. 51. Minjee Lee, who is ranked 13th, is the top-ranked Australian and only the top two will get to compete at the Olympic Games when golf returns to Olympic competition in August.
Webb finished tied-50th at Sahalee and has been struggling by her high standards. Lee was tied-12th and continues her good form.
At the top end Henderson secured her first major title at 18 years of age when she hit a short iron shot stone dead at the first playoff hole against Ko, and made the putt.
