Open Review: Tom Watson

Golfing legend Tom Watson may not have challenged for the Stonehaven Cup this week, the master still managed 14 magical birdies. Here is our look at Watson&aposs week at The Lakes. Get up to speed on the tournament by downloading the Official Emirates Australian Open iPhone App here. Round 1: 6-over 78 Watson didn&apost have the ideal start to the tournament, shooting 2 double bogeys and 6 bogeys to sit at 6-over par after the first day. However he still managed 4 birdies on the 3rd, 11th, 13th and 14th, so the signs were there he might come good as the week progressed. Round 2: 4-under 68 It&aposs often the measure of every true champion as to how they bounce back from adversity, and Watson certainly did that in the 2nd Round. He picked up 5 birdies (on the 13th, 14th, 17th, and 18th) and just 1 bogey (on the 3rd) in a round of 68 that saw him make the cut at 2-over. Round 3: 6-over 78 Unfortunately, moving day was unkind to Watson. He struggled with 8 bogeys ending his chances of making a run for the title. He was still able to birdie the 13th for the third consecutive day, as well as the 17th, but finishing up at 8-over for the tournament would mean his final round would be a more relaxed affair. Round 4: 3-under 69 In preparation for the final round, Watson told reporters that he spent a night at the Opera House and then enjoyed a good night&aposs sleep. It seemed to work, with the American treating his large gallery to a round which featured 3 birdies. Once again he birdied the 13th, meaning he picked up four shots at that hole across the tournament. Tournament Score 78 + 68 + 78 + 69 = 293 (5-over par) View Watson&aposs 72-hole scorecard here Will this be the last we see of Watson on Australian shores? While he didn&apost threaten the leaders, Watson still put on a good show and treated many of the crowd to a handshake or a smile, something they will surely remember for many years to come.
