Adelaide’s Wade Ormsby the son of PGA Life Member Peter Ormsby from Adelaide Shores Golf Park started playing golf at the age of three.
The highlight of Ormsby’s amateur career was reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Amateur Championships in 1996. In 2007, he was selected in the South Australian Men’s State Team before attending the University of Houston in the United States for three years.
Ormsby turned professional in 2001 and played his first season on the International Schedule after graduating from the 2003 Qualifying School, and was in danger of returning in 2004 until a share of sixth place in his last event of the season – the Open de Madrid – secured his card.
He enjoyed a more consistent second season on The European Tour in 2005, finishing 71st in the Order of Merit, but was back at Qualifying School in 2006 and 2008, both times finishing in the all-important top 30 to secure his playing privileges and in the latter finishing second at PGA Cataluyna Resort.
Ormsby was back on the Challenge Tour in 2010, finishing 51st in the Rankings, but ensured a return to The European Tour for 2011 by taking the 25th card at Qualifying School Final Stage.
Adding to his reputation as a Qualifying School specialist, in 2013 he claimed the ninth card at PGA Catalunya Resort, the sixth time in eight trips that he had done so since 2003.
The 34-year-old has made 201 tournament appearances on the European Tour and has yet to record a victory, however he has won on the Asian Tour, winning the Panasonic Open in India in 2013.
In November 2014 Ormsby enjoyed his best result on the European Tour when he finished in tied-fourth place at the Turkish Airlines Open, in the process collecting $320,000AUD.
In doing so Ormsby qualified for the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai finishing in a tie for 47th at 2-under with some big names; Lee Westward, Charl Schwartzel and Graeme McDowell.
Currently ranked 192 in the world, Ormsby is set to make some noise at this week’s Australian Open
