Page-turner for Nathan and Ash

The finale to the 2017 Stuart Appleby Regional Series was contested today on the Champions course at Sandhurst Golf Club with yet another jam-packed field of 100 players. It was the most perfect winters day with the sun shining brightly and virtually not a breath of wind to mention.

After a strong year of golf to date Nathan Page fired a great score to capture the overall boys title. The National member managed his way round the par 72 layout with a stellar round of three under-par 69. This form will hold him in good stead as he heads off to Hong Kong to represent Australia in the Asia Pacific Junior Championship.

With a win in the Stuart Appleby Regional Series event at Keysborough back in July, Ashleigh Hall added another trophy to the cabinet claiming the overall girls title this afternoon. The 17-year old recording a very impressive round of two under-par 70 for top spot. Her round was blemish free carding 16 pars and two birdies on the 5th and 7th holes. Huntingdale’s Jeneath Wong was next best finishing with a one over par 73.

In the handicap divisions, it was Grace Mak that found the day easy going when she posted an incredible score of 47 stableford points to capture the C division prize in what was her very first 18-hole competition. In B division it was a round of 67 nett from Levi Wardle which saw him finish alone at the top of the leaderboard. Meanwhile in A division it was Ashleigh Hall that again proved too strong taking home the title with 68 nett from her 2 handicap.

Early in the morning 42 players contested in the 9-hole Stuart Appleby Rookie Series competition. Phoenix Diaz came in with the best score in the under 9 boys section with a round of 39 for the top spot. Archie Alston found his way onto the podium in the under 9 boys with the best nett score for the day of just 24. Sophie Mann cemented top spot in the under 9 girls with 49 this morning while six-year-old Arena Tran won the handicap sector with 37.

Tyler Talbot was too strong in the under 12 boys with a solid score of level par 44. Lenny Saville came in with a round of 34 nett to take out the handicap prize on a count-back from Liam Mourant. In the under 12 girls section Hannah Wong was the best in with a round of 50, edging out Portia Hall by a single shot. Amelia Goodwin walked home with the handicap title following her round of 35 this morning.

The under 16 boys gross title went to Joshua Marshall after carding a strong round of 39 while Angus Hawksworth was victorious in the handicap sector after shooting 37 around the tricky back nine of the Champions course. Angelique Georgiou made it back to back wins in the under 16 girls category firing 53.

The overall Regional Series Cup was fiercely contested since the first event in January with the leading eligible playing earing rights to represent Victoria in the upcoming Jack Newton Srixon Invitational. With a number of players still in the mix is was destine for a nail biting finish.

In the end it was Nathan Page’s season, capturing the title and fittingly crowned the Regional Series Cup Champion for 2017. Although he didn’t win any other Regional Series events throughout the year his consistent performance was good to match. Page will now join the team that will be representing Victoria at the JNJG Srixon International in early October.

Nivethan Kanthan tallied a significant score of 115 points across 54-holes in the A Division Regional Series Cup to secure victory. The Spring Valley member had strong finishes today and at Woodlands with a win coming at Keysborough.

With only a few points separating Jacob White and Valentin Rodriguez heading into today’s final event in B division it was anyone’s guess who would walk away victorious. In the end it was Commonwealth’s Jacob White that prevailed by 7 points.

Buninyong’s Paddy Mutrphy was presented with the C division Cup accumulating 103 points across the season. Murphy was a strong performer all year with his best finish coming at Yarrawonga when he won.

The School Sport Victoria 12 years and under team was selected today from the scores in the 18-hole Regional Series Competition. The leading 8 Boys & 4 Girls (best scratch stableford scores) have been selected in the SSV Team Vic Golf 12 years & under state team to compete at the Pacific School Games to be held in Adelaide, 2 – 8 December
