Pascoe and Thomas Victorious in Country Foursomes

Played since 1979, the Victorian Women’s Country Foursomes brings players from country clubs across Victoria to kick off the Country Championships week. In an attempt to revitalise the competition after a dramatic decrease in entries last year, an 18-hole format was adopted for 2018.

It was a dominating display of golf from the newly crowned champions, an 81 off the stick from Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) and Rebecca Thomas (Leongatha) saw the pair take top honours from a strong field of 67 pairs. This is the third time Pascoe has etched her name on the Marion Dwyer Cup and a first for Thomas. The 9 over par for the pair was the best score by 8 strokes, runners up Lauren Higgins (Warrnambool) and Marion Venn (Terang) carded an 89 off the stick.

Third place was won by Tracey Clouston (Numurkah) and Kim Morris (Shepparton), a countback going down to their last 6 holes of the day saw them over the line ahead of Elizabeth Lacey (Nhill) and Wendy Burns (Midlands).

Local members Rosemary Sandow and Edith Mason were victorious in the nett section of the event, a 76 from a half combined handicap of 28 was the best score by one stroke, Julie Vardy (Maffra) and Jacinta Wilson (Lakes Entrance) posted a 77 of an 18 handicap to finish second. Another countback was required to separate the Vardy-Wilson pair from eventual third placed Donna Rohrich and Elizabeth Mott (both Commercial Albury) who also finished on a nett 77 from a 17 handicap.

Round 1 of the Country Championship and Glenelg Cup will begin at 10:00am tomorrow morning on both Lake and Murray Courses.
