Helen Pascoe (Bunniyong) has been crowned the 2018 Ruby McKenzie Trophy champion (best gross) after producing two excellent rounds in the Victorian Women’s Autumn Tournament held at the beautiful Murray Downs Golf Club.  Pascoe followed up her first round 72 with an 80 today to finish on an 8-over total of 152. Pascoe held off Cobden’s Deborah Rix (78 & 80 – 158) and Victoria’s Stephanie Wearne (77 & 81 – 158) with Rix taking out the best A-Grade gross over Wearne on a countback.

The winner of the Vi Teesdale Trophy, awarded to the player with the best overall nett score, went to Numurkah’s Tracey Clouston. Clouston played off a daily handicap of 8 and returned two very solid rounds of 71 and 72. Clouston held off day 1 leader Karen Fitzgerald (Rich River GC) on a countback after she finished with a second round nett score of 76 to go with her great score of 67 yesterday. Fortunately, Fitzgerald didn’t leave empty handed as she claimed the overall A-Grade nett prize.

In the B Grade championships, Traralgon’s Julie Payne held off a fast finishing Rita De Bondt (Leongatha GC) to take out the title by a single shot. Payne fired 98 on day 2 to go with her first round score of 94 to finish on 192 for the 36-hole event. De Bondt started 12 shots back in round 2 after her opening round of 106 but a fabulous score of 87 on day 2 saw her finish just one stroke behind. Playing off a handicap of 21, De Bondt produced nett scores of 85 and 66 which saw her claim the B-Grade 36 hole nett trophy. Sue Howie (Ballarat GC) finished runner-up in the nett with her rounds of 80 & 74 giving her a total of 154.

In C grade it was Julie Mahney (East Framlingham GC) winning the gross after firing rounds of 100 and 98 for a total of 198 to finish 4 ahead of Robyn Hose (Port Fairy GC). Mahney completed an extremely successful tournament by adding the C Grade nett prize to her collection. Mahney finished with nett 152 to edge out Hose (Port Fairy GC) on a countback.

The D Grade championships proved to be a tight finish with Joan Foster (Murray Downs) using her local knowledge to come from 3 shots behind to win the gross with a total of 211. Foster was victorious by just one shot over one of the first round leaders, Clifton Springs member Pat Egan, who followed her first round of 105 with a 107 for a total of 212. Foster was also victorious in the nett with her total of 153 after rounds of 79 and 74 off a daily handicap of 29. Closely behind Foster was Port Fairy’s Marlene Hoy with nett scores of 80 and 75 to finish two shots back on 155.

A huge thank you to everyone at Murray Downs for their tremendous hospitality. A great turnout from volunteers and very welcoming staff throughout helped make the event an enormous success.
