After the very successful Foursomes event yesterday, today it was time for the marquee events of the week to begin, the coveted Victorian Women’s Country Championships and Glenelg Cup. More overnight rain left the course damp but by no means unplayable, with two hundred and thirty three players taking to the fairways in two fields for both events.
The first round of the Glenelg Cup ended with a very close leaderboard, seeing Janice Marchesi (Newry) take the smallest of leads into the final round tomorrow, returning a nett 73 to have a one shot margin ahead of two way tie between Di Howland (Warrnambool) and a very consistent Banksie Buckley (Kyneton). The race for top honours is far from over, with another 6 players sitting within 5 shots of the leader.
While the Glenelg Cup is a Championship of nett scores, Di Howland also performed well in the gross component, her 92 off the stick placed her three shots ahead of Belvoir Park’s Angela Broadbent.
In the Championships side of the equation, crowd favourite Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) has taken a one shot lead moving into the final round ahead of Alex Hilliard (Cardinia Beaconhills) and 3 shots ahead of Casey Wild (Wodonga) who shot 76. Pascoe is also having tremendous success in the Golf Victoria senior calendar events in 2016, among a number of other players in the field, and will tomorrow play to win her first Country Championships title.
Helen is also the joint leader in the nett section with Kerry Scales (Heywood), both returning fantastic scores of 71 to have a 3 shot buffer from Hilliard.
With scores this close no results are guaranteed until the final card is returned tomorrow, an exciting end to a great event.
