Ian McCleary (Kooringal) has held his nerve to take out the 2018 Hepburn Springs Senior Amateur under beautiful blue skies to continue his stellar season. McCleary held a one shot lead overnight and despite a great fight from Geoffrey Charnley (Rossdale) he proved too strong, winning by two shots and saluting for the fifth time this season . Charnley started with 6 straight pars to level with McCleary but a bogey on the 7th accompanied by a birdie by McCleary saw him trail by by 2. McCleary held steady round the back nine finishing with a one over par 67 to see his final score of 136 winning by two shots. Charnley was a gallant second with his score of 138.
The nett section saw overnight leader Ross Hadler follow his 65 from day 1 with a 69 to win by just one shot. The Rokewood member, playing off a handicap 20, held strong over the fast finishing Stephen Valentine. Valentine who plays off a handicap of 3, shot an excellent 65 nett to go with his 70 from the first days play to see him finish just one shot back.
The women’s scratch stableford event saw the in form Helen Pascoe (Bunniyong) take out yet another title. Pascoe has had an outstanding season taking out multiple senior events as well as the Victorian Women’s Autumn Tournament held in April at Murray Downs. Pascoe’s scores of 30 and 31 were enough to crown her the 2018 Hepburn Springs Women’s Champion. Runner-up in the scratch stableford section was Sandra Collingwood (Keysborough) after she finished with 47 for the two days play.
The stableford section was taken out by Hepburn Springs club champion Bev Smith. Smith stormed home with 36 points on day 2 to go with her 31 from Thursday’s round. Missing out on top prize on a countback was Packenham’s Tina Cowie. Cowie also finished the second round a lot stronger coming home with 35.
A big thank you to Hepburn Springs GC, all the committee members and volunteers for their wonderful hospitality over the past 2 days. The next events coming up on the senior calendar are the trio of Heathcote, Shepparton and Tocumwal the week starting 17 June. The always popular August senior events will be opened on Monday morning so make sure to get in early.
