Metropolitan Pennant – Simpson Cup Round 5 summary

Winners in round five of the Metropolitan Pennant season played at Glenelg Golf Club were Glenelg, Kooyonga, Royal Adelaide and The Grange.

In the first match of the day off the 1st tee, Glenelg produced its best performance in a number of years to overpower Highercombe 7 – 0, Highercombes third such defeat of the season.

Winners for Glenelg were; Braeden Kelly 2&1 in his first Simpson Cup match, James McDonald 5&4, David Hiern 6&5 and Anthony Olsen 7&6 who remains undefeated. At number three Will Starkey defeated Mark Deacon 7&6, Lachlan Barker won at number two 5&4 against Scott Mills while Josh Hayes edged out Nick May 3&1.

In the other early match off the 10th tee, Kooyonga secured its fifth straight win defeating Tea Tree Gully 5 – 2.

Winners for Kooyonga were, Zak Fuller 4&3, Joe Hodgson 5&4 and bringing up his fifth straight win Daniel Speirs 5&4 against Jacin Cook.

Other winners for Kooyonga were, Heath Riches 3&2 and Tim Baker 1up. For Tea Tree Gully Zak Amundson defeated Sam Gava 6&5 while Chris Austin won 1up over Will Somerfield at number one.

In a relatively tight tussle, Royal Adelaide secured its first win of the year defeating The Vines 5 – 2.

Royal won all four bottom matches with Nathan Baulderstone defeating Luke Noble 2up, both Will Arnold and Matt Lawson winning 3&1 and Hall of Fame Member David Cherry winning 4&3 against Matthew Bell.

At number three Tony Nobbs won for The Vines against Billy Cawthorne 2&1 and Sam Earl won over Andrei Ezergalis 5&3 to bring the margin back to 5-2 in favour of Royal Adelaide.

Not everything went smoothly for The Grange despite a 4.5 – 2.5 win against Blackwood who proved to be a formidable opponent.

Matches were locked away 2.5 each and a huge upset was on the cards, however the top two players for The Grange helped secure the win with Justin Crowder securing his fifth match in a row by defeating Andrew Humphries 3&1 and Ben Stowe accounting for Nick Wake 5&4 to claim victory for The Grange.

Next week’s round six matches are held at The Vines with the host side coming up against Glenelg. Blackwood plays Kooyonga, while Tea Tree Gully and The Grange do battle. Highercombe play Royal Adelaide to close out the round.

Metropolitan Pennant – Women’s A1 Round 3 summary

The Grange and Glenelg remain undefeated and Blackwood notched up its first win after round three of the 2015 Women's A1 Pennant Competition played at Royal Adelaide.

In the first contest of the day Glenelg proved too strong for Royal Adelaide winning 5 – 0 and in doing so moved to the top of the table to keep their Championship defence on track.

Sarah Crocker, at number five won 5&3 against Sophie Hilditch, Josie Hodge closed out her match at number four with a magnificent long birdie putt from off the green for a 7/6 win, while Sophie James won her match on 14 with a 5&4 win over Jill McEwin.

At number two, Elysia Yap was square after the first three holes but pushed ahead to win 7&6 against Anne Ellis and at number one Jenny Lee who had just returned from the British Amateur completed the clean sweep winning 6&4 against SA Senior Amateur Champion Juliet Hugo.

In the second contest of the day Blackwood defeated the combined Golf SA team 3-2 in a close contest.

Matches were square two all after Blackwood’s Rosemary Underwood and Sally Graham both had wins while for Golf SA Reo Jenner and Rachel Taylor won their matches.

It would all come down to the number one match and Jo Buchanan proved too steady for Country Champion Deb Christie winning 4&3 to secure the points for Blackwood.

The Grange mostly controlled its match with Kooyonga with Jean Foo and Jin-Young Yun both winning early then Kristalle Blum defeated Deb Percey 4&3.

Kooyonga’s matches came courtesy of Caillin Lakin squaring with Cassidy Evreniadis and former State Champion Lyn McGough winning at number one against Ella Adams 1up.

Next week the top two teams, Glenelg and The Grange faceoff in what may be a prelude to the grand final.

Kooyonga also play Blackwood with a big win seeing them potentially moving into the top two. In the final match Golf SA play Royal Adelaide with the winner to secure their first win. All matches are to be played at Kooyonga Golf Club at Lockleys.
