Glenelg #1 Jenny Lee on her way to a 2up win in the 2012 Pennant Final Metropolitan Pennant – Simpson Cup Round 5 summary Kooyonga remains top of the Simpson Cup ladder after a comprehensive 7 – 0 victory over Highercombe in round 5 played at The Grange West Course. In other matches, The Grange made a big statement defeating Glenelg 6 – 1 to jump to second on the table, while Royal Adelaide picked up a crucial half, squaring with Tea Tree Gully. Mt Lofty recorded its first win for the season defeating Flagstaff Hill 4 – 3. After winning the opening three matches Highercombe retains fourth position despite consecutive 7 – 0 losses. Despite being completely out of form Highercombe s season is not over yet, with a second place finish not beyond the realms of possibility. Kooyonga however were in another class, winning all matches convincingly. Jordan Bishop and Daniel Speirs defeated their opponents 8&7 and 8&6 respectively, while Zak Fuller won 3&2 and Will Somerfield cruised in his match winning 4&3. Finishing off the job was Heath Riches 2&1 over Ben Hallam, Tim Baker 4&3 over Mark Deacon and at number one Charles Shaw accounting for Nick May 5&3. After a draw and narrow loss the past two weeks, Mt Lofty has notched up its first win for the year defeating the luckless Flagstaff Hill 4 – 3. The players to get the job done for Mt Lofty were, Nigel Hayes, Phil Roberts and Tim Atze while David Henshaw and Tyron Turnbull squared their matches gaining valuable halves. Royal Adelaide was in the box seat to secure its first win for the year, after at one stage leading Tea Tree Gully 3.5 v 1.5. However, Tea Tree Gullies top two players Greg Blewett and Chris Austin claimed vital wins squaring the contest 3.5 each. Although sitting bottom of the table, Royal Adelaide is perhaps only one player short of being a title challenger. Having lost three matches 4 – 3 and drawing on the weekend, scrambling wins in the final two matches against Flagstaff Hill and Mt Lofty is high on the agenda. If they can t defeat one of these opponents, they will compete in the Men’sA2 Grade in 2014. Without regular players Campbell Rawson and Matt McGowan, Glenelg was unable to compete with The Grange on its home track, going down 6 – 1. The Grange was able to win all three close matches. They were (match 6) Scott Webb 1 up over Josh Hayes, (match 5) Nick Cheary 2up over Anthony Olsen and (match 4) Matthew Lisk against Matt Overall 1up. Crowder, Williams and Brown also easily accounted for their opponents, while Glenelg s David Hiern with exceptional ball striking from tee to green, was Glenelg s sole winner 1up over Rudi Du Plooy.
