Metropolitan Pennant – Simpson Cup Round 6 summary
The Grange has secured a berth in the Simpson Cup grand final, moving 2 contests clear, after defeating Highercombe 5.5 – 1.5 in wet and windy conditions at Glenelg.
In other matches, Glenelg defeated Royal Adelaide, Tea Tree Gully accounted for The Stirling and Kooyonga was too strong for Blackwood ending its final chances.
With one round to play, Kooyonga is in the box seat to make the final, although Tea Tree Gully, Glenelg and Royal Adelaide, are all still in with a chance.
In the first contest of the day in round 6, The Grange was cruising to a comprehensive win until the final two matches. Scotty Mills at number two for Highercombe showed some resistance to halve his match with Matthew Lisk and then Ben Hallam played the match of his life to overcome Jack Williams 1up.
Winners for Grange were Webb, Tucker, Na, Crowder, and Stowe in the 5.5 – 1.5 victory.
Tea Tree Gully moved from 6th to 3rd with a 6 – 1 defeat of The Stirling. Close matches were between Chris Austin and Tyron Turnbull and Sam Burton and Brad Altmann, with both Tea Tree Gully players winning 1up.
Gullies other winners were Amundson, McMahon, Thomson and Blewett, while for The Stirling, Tim Atze won over Chris Moon 3&2.
Kooyonga cruised to victory over Blackwood 5.5 – 1.5 with Bishop, Cocks, Speirs, Riches and Baker all winning. At number one, Will Somerfield halved with Nick Wake while Ben Tobin was the sole winner for Blackwood over Charles Shaw 1up.
In the tightest contest of the round, Glenelg defeated Royal Adelaide 4 – 3. A win by Royal Adelaide would have seen it play Kooyonga next week at home with the winner progressing to the final.
Royal held a 3 – 2 lead with wins to Nathan Baulderstone 8&6 over Sam Raschella, Aaron Southern 2up against Josh Hayes and Andrei Ezergailis 4&3 over Connor Chant, but were unable to secure the crucial fourth match.
Glenelg’s Leigh Attenborough continued his winning run defeating Matt Lawson 3&2, while wins also to David Hiern, Campbell Rawson and Matt Overall was enough for Glenelg to claim the points.
Next week’s final round of matches being played at Royal Adelaide sees some fascinating contests.
If Kooyonga wins against Royal Adelaide they will move through to the final with a chance to defend their title. A 7 – 0 win to Royal Adelaide could see them sneak into second if other results go in their favour.
Tea Tree Gully has a tough task coming up against The Grange, however their opponents may take their foot off the pedal with their spot in the final guaranteed. If Royal Adelaide beat Kooyonga, a 6 – 1 win to Tea Tree Gully could see them progress.
Similar to Tea Tree Gully, Glenelg needs to defeat Blackwood approx. 6 – 1 or better and rely on Royal Adelaide defeating Kooyonga to make the final. A possibility, but Glenelg may be thinking about round 1 and what could have been if they had defeated The Stirling.
In the final match of the round Highercombe play The Stirling with the victor finishing the season 7th and loser relegated to A2. A squared contest would not be good for Highercombe.
May the best teams win.
