Metropolitan Pennant – Simpson Cup Round 7 summary

For a second year in a row, The Grange and Kooyonga will go head to head for the metropolitan men's pennant title, when the two team's meet in the final of the Simpson Cup on Sunday 13 July at The Grange Golf Club.

In yesterday's final round at Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga, Glenelg, Tea Tree Gully and Royal Adelaide were all in with a chance to progress through to the final against an already qualified Grange team.

However, Kooyonga retained its second placing by defeating Royal Adelaide in the first contest of the day, 4.5 – 2.5 to end all other teams’ hopes.

In other matches, The Grange comfortably defeated Tea Tree Gully 7 – 0 to finish minor premier, Glenelg accounted for Blackwood 6 – 1 to finish the season 3rd and in the battle to avoid relegatio Highercombe defeated The Stirling 4 – 3.

In the crucial contest between Kooyonga and Royal Adelaide matches were tied 1 all early with Nathan Baulderstone winning for Royal and Jason Cocks for Kooyonga.

However, Kooyonga managed to win match 5, Charles Shaw 1 up over Matt Lawson, match 4 Daniel Speirs 3&1 against Billy Cawthorne and Heath Riches at number 3, 2&1 over Stephen Hudson to secure the win.

The Grange continued on its winning way proving too strong for Tea Tree Gully 7 – 0. Close matches were between Ben Tucker and Zak Amundson and Matthew Lisk and Chris Austin, with both Grange players winning 2&1. While Justin Crowder won his match on the 18th 1up over Sam Burton. Tea Tree Gully finishes the season in 4th position as per 2013 with 3 wins.

For a second year in a row Glenelg has just missed a finals berth finishing 3rd. Against Blackwood, they came to play, wining the first 6 matches with their only loss at number one with Matt Overall going down to Nick Wake 3&2. Blackwood back into the Simpson Cup finishes 6th with 3 wins and should be pleased with its season.

In the final match of the round, Highercombe and The Stirling faced off, with the winner guaranteed to avoid relegation. In the tightest of tight contests, Highercombe managed to claim the win 4 – 3 with Ben Hallam the saviour winning the final match 3&1 over Tyron Turnbull.

Other winners for Highercombe were Andrew Couzner, Nick May and Mark Deacon.

Next week's Simpson Cup final hosted by The Grange, sees the home side looking for its 22nd title and its first flag since winning three in a row between 2007 – 2009.

Kooyonga, defending champions and winners from 2004 – 2006, are gunning for its 33rd title.

When the sides met in round 1, The Grange triumphed 5.5 – 1.5, however The Grange will be without Anthony Murdaca who played at number 1 that day, so an extremely tight contest is expected.

Metropolitan Pennant – Women’s A1 Round 5 summary

Due to inclement weather early at Royal Adelaide, all Rd 5 women’s contests were cancelled.

Considering there is no relegation in the women’s top grade and both Glenelg and The Grange had already secured a place in the grand final, the outcome had no real disadvantage to any team.

Kooyonga finishes the season in third position, Blackwood fourth, Golf SA fifth and Royal Adelaide at the foot of the ladder.

Next week at The Grange, the home side plays the minor premier and defending champion Glenelg in what should be an enthralling battle.
