Metropolitan Pennant – Women’s A1 Round 5 summary
Glenelg and The Grange will contest this weekend's Women’s A1 Pennant Final after both teams showed impressive form throughout the minor rounds of the Golf SA Women's Pennant season.
Glenelg who have won the past three titles, finished top of the table for the third year in a row after defeating Kooyonga 5-0, their third clean sweep of the season.
Without number one Jenny Lee, Glenelg players still managed to get the job done. Winners were; Elysia Yap 1up, Sophie James 5&3, Jill Hodge 3&2, Josie Hodge 3&2 and Sarah Griffiths 8&6.
The Grange cemented its spot in the final defeating the Golf SA composite team 3.5 – 1.5 with the top three matches tight.
The Grange won match five courtesy of Jean Foo 5&3 over Taylah Cooper and then Kristalle Blum 7&5 against Cecelia Douglas. For Golf SA, Reo Jenner capped off a fantastic year winning her fourth match of the season this time over state rep Cassidy Evreniadis 1up. Match two was halved between Caitlin Roberts and Susan Keylock so to determine the result its was down to Ella Adams to defeat Rachael Taylor 3&1 to secure the win for The Grange.
The Golf SA team would be relatively happy with its season winning one match and being competitive in the remainder. They finished the season in fourth place.
In the final match of the season Blackwood defeated Royal Adelaide 3 – 2 to notch up its third win in a row, finishing the season in fine style placing third overall.
Winners for Blackwood were Paula White 5&4, Sally Graham 1up and Jo Buchanan 5&3, whilst Royal Adelaide players Sophie Hilditch 5&3 and Anne Ellis 4&2 secured Royal’s points.
Royal Adelaide showed heart for much of the season, but was unable to secure a victory, as was the case in 2014, to finish in fifth place.
In next week's final hosted by Kooyonga, defending champions Glenelg will be gunning for its 22nd title and fourth in a row, a feat accomplished once before by Glenelg between 1964 – 1967.
Glenelg will be without ace number one player Jenny Lee unbeaten in her past 16 matches, due to overseas tournament commitments. Despite this Glenelg will be formidable in the final against their younger opponents.
The Grange will be looking to claim its 5th title and first since victory in 2004. The Grange has lost the final to Glenelg the past two years 4 – 1 but with another year of experience under their belts, expect a close contest.
When the sides met in round four, it was Glenelg who triumphed 4 -1 (with Jenny Lee).
