Pennant: Who will hold aloft the 2014 Simpson Cup

Simpson Cup since 1927

Golf SA Pennant season to commence on Sunday 18 May

The Golf SA Pennant season will commence on Sunday 18 May, with the Men’s top grade ‘The Simpson Cup’ being played at Highercombe Golf Club.

The Simpson Cup is an 8 team Competition, played over a 7 round season (each team plays each other once). The top 2 teams after 7 rounds, will play off in the Final on Sunday 13th July at The Grange Golf Club.

Defending Champions Kooyonga will retain 6 players from its Championship winning team: Tim Baker, Heath Riches, Charles Shaw, Will Somerfield, Zak Fuller and Jordan Bishop with only Daniel Speirs exiting due to overseas travel.

Kooyonga Team Manager Geoff Raneberg believes his team will be right in the mix once again.

“The playing group is eagerly anticipating the challenge of defending our title”. Raneberg said

The Grange, will be fielding a team of 5 of the top 7 players in the state; Anthony Murdaca, Justin Crowder, Jack Williams, Matthew Lisk and Ben Stowe. Champions from 2007-2009 they should be hungry enough to get the job done.

“We are committed to going one step further than in 2013 when we were beaten by Kooyonga in the final. We’ve lost some experience from last year's team, but with five players in this year's State Team, we are confident we have the team to be a title contender. The additions of Tucker, Coleman, Demasi and Na create a good blend of experience and youth within the playing group, which looks forward to the challenge this season”. Team Manager Nick Cheary said.

Other clubs who should feature strongly include, Glenelg, after just missing out on the top two last year, along with 2010-12 Premiers Tea Tree Gully lead by Chris Austin and Greg Blewett.

Blackwood, Men's A2 premiers last season have been promoted to the top grade, whilst last years wooden spooners Flagstaff Hill, have been relegated to A2.
