Kooyonga, The Grange and Glenelg have enjoyed a winning start to the season, in round one of the 2014 Women's A1 Pennant Competition at Blackwood.
Kooyonga winless in 2013 and finishing at the foot of the ladder, opened in fine style defeating the Golf SA combined team 3 – 2 winning the first three matches of the contest.
Deb Percey, Jodie Deacon and Vivian Chu all won their matches while both Caillin Lakin and Lyn McGough were defeated on the 18th by Golf SA’s Acacia Curtis and Rachel Taylor respectively.
The Grange last season’s runner up are off to a flying start winning 5 – 0 against old rival Royal Adelaide.
Ella Adams, Jean Foo, Cassidy Evreniadis and Louise Glennon all won convincingly with the closest match a 4&3 win to Kristalle Blum over Juliet Hugo.
In the final match of the round, the Glenelg team who have won the past two titles, proved too strong for the home side Blackwood 3.5 – 1.5.
Lorraine Brown won the first match of the day for Blackwood at number 5 and after Sally Graham held a 3 hole lead through nine over Sarah Griffiths and Angela Masters found herself in a close tussle with Jill Hodge, a major upset was on the cards.
However, Griffiths managed to fight back and claim her match 2&1 to square the ledger and Masters and Hodge halved, leaving it to the final two matches.
With the states top ranked player Jenny Lee at number 1 for Glenelg and state team member Elysia Yap at number 2, Glenelg’s top order proved too strong with Lee winning 10&8 and Yap 4&3.
