Percy big winner as hurricane blows in

It’s probably not how Cam Percy had it drawn up, but no doubt he’ll take it.

As Hurricane Matthew wreaks havoc across the Caribbean region, the Web.Com Tour Championship became a precautionary victim with evacuations ordered across many parts of Florida, including near the Atlantic Beach Country Club which had been scheduled to host the season finale.

Percy, who finished his PGA Tour season in 168th on the FedEx Cup standings, was narrowly on the right side of the all-important top 25 line after three weeks of the month-long Web.Com Tour playoffs in the race to get back to the main tour.

So when the finale was cancelled today, Percy assumed the 24th position he’d earnt in the previous three weeks and packed his bags again for the big dance.

Also graduating from the Web.Com playoff series are fellow Aussies Cam Smith (3rd), Rod Pampling (11th), both returning to the top flite, and newcomer Brett Drewitt (16th), of New South Wales.

Drewitt, 25, has made huge strides in the past couple of years. The Sydneysider reached this stage via the PGA Tour China and was almost a certainty anyhow after a T5 finish in week three of the playoffs in Ohio.

But the cancellation, the first on the secondary tour for 11 years, was bad news for Victorian veteran Stuart Appleby.

The nine-time PGA Tour winner was left stranded in 33rd position and will have to make do with conditional status on the big tour, although he’ll have full Web.Com rights.

Rhein Gibson will also be back on the Web.Com after his 45th-placed finish, while Matt Jones will relinquish his PGA Tour card after finishing a distant 85th to cap an indifferent season.
