Melbourne's Cam Percy has brushed off a back injury that threatened his promising US PGA Tour season.
Percy, 42, was forced out of the Honda Classic last month because he "couldn't handle the pain" of a back injury that spoiled arguably his most consistent run on the main tour.
But today, in his first tournament since, Percy bounced straight back into a good cheque with a T24 finish after rounds of 69-71-67-68 at the Puerto Rico Open.
The $US24,300 he banked lifted him to $US311,829 and, importantly, up to 117th and inside the all-important top 125 on the FedEx Cup points list who earn full cards for next season.
Percy’s best finish on the main tour was his playoff loss to Jonathan Byrd’s hole-in-one in the 2010 Shriners Open, but he has missed just one cut (excluding the Honda) in his nine events to date this season.
A "tough love" lesson from Ian Baker-Finch in February in which the sociable Percy was advised strongly to stop talking and play more professionally appears to have done the trick, particularly with very few guaranteed starts on his limited playing status.
Percy’s T10 finish at Pebble Beach earnt him a start in last the Genesis Open at Riviera where he was among the leaders after a superb opening 66 before fading to finish T49 as the back injury struck.
John Senden (T37) and first-year PGA Tour player Brett Drewitt were the only other Aussies to make the cut in Puerto Rico, an event played opposite the World Golf Championship Match Play in Texas.
