Local favourite Caleb Perry of Warrnambool and Kilmore’s Jessica Pickwick are the leaders after round 1 of the Westcoast Open Amateur.
In perfect playing conditions this afternoon, Perry recorded 5 birdies en route to a 2 under par round of 70 to be leading the men’s field on his home track. The 2017 Victorian Men’s Country Champion is a mere shot ahead of duo David Walker (Chirnside Park) and Alvin Hiew (Woodlands), both carding one under par rounds of 71.
Across in the women’s field, Pickwick is leading the pack with a day best of 2 over par 74 off the stick. The 2015 Victorian Women’s Par 3 Champion is ahead by 3 shots from local Joanna Flaherty (Port Fairy / Commonwealth) and QLD visitor Victoria Fricot of Noosa Spring on a pair of 77s.
Newly introduced this year as a Victorian Men’s & Women’s Ranking event, the Westcoast Open Amateur will be played over 72 holes with 18 each on Friday and Saturday at Warrnambool then moving west to Port Fairy for 36 holes on Sunday. The men’s & women’s winners will receive a conditional amateur exemption (category (k)) into the 2018 Oates Vic Open at 13th Beach Golf Links.
Round 2 will start at 7:45am tomorrow morning.
