Jarrod Lyle’s former club Commonwealth is putting its weight behind a huge golf day to raise money for the fallen champ’s family.
Commonwealth GC general manager Peter Parks said the private Melbourne Sandbelt club would throw open its doors next Monday for a corporate day that hopes to raise $50,000 for Lyle’s widow Briony and their young daughters, Lusi and Jemma.
Lyle passed away last month after a third battle with leukemia and Parks said he had been inundated with requests from people wanting to help the family.
“We have all been moved by the tragic circumstances around Jarrod and it’s particularly heart-warming to see the support from within the golf industry and participants,” Parks said.
“Jarrod was a very popular member at Commonwealth and, to that end, we are running a fundraising golf day next Monday (10 September).”
Parks said the club, which also ran a special members’ dinner last weekend for Lyle, would donate 100 per cent of the entry to fee to the family’s trust fund.
Lyle, was a pennant player for Commonwealth from age 16 in colts right through until he turned professional in 2004 and a four-time club champion.
He remained in constant contact with many at the club right through his career.
Parks acknowledged the event was expensive, but said tickets for the day had been in demand because of Lyle’s great reputation and his young family’s plight.
“We offer no excuse – if we can sell 25 groups, this will be $50,000 to a cause that has touched everyone’s hearts,” he said.
“It should be a great day in honour of a great bloke and a great Commonwealth member.”
The club is accepting entries from singles for $500 or from teams of four for $2000, including all food and beverages and more than $2000 of prizes on and off the course.
